Urban Dreams and Realities

An Interdisciplinary Conference on the City in Ancient Cultures

On 21-22 October 2011, the department of History and Classics at the University of Alberta will be hosting an interdisciplinary conference on cities in ancient cultures. It will include 38 papers and two keynote addresses on a wide variety of topics to do with cities and urban culture in the pre-modern civilizations of the Mediterranean Basin, the Near East, South and East Asia and Central America.
A range of perspectives are represented, addressing both the material remains of ancient cities and their textual representation.

The conference is being held under the auspices of our graduate specialization in Ancient Societies and Cultures, and participants include many of the faculty teaching in that program, as well as faculty members and advanced graduate students from universities in the United States, Europe and the Middle East.

Keynote speakers include Onno van Nijf of Groningen University, author most recently of The Civic World of Professional Associations in the Roman East and editor of several volumes on various aspects of urban culture in post-classical Greece and Josef Wiesehöfer of Kiel University, a leading international scholar of ancient Iran and author of over a dozen books on various aspects of ancient Iranian and Mediterranean history.
